Start of Week Three
This morning I started off on my own because Rocco had his usual class until 9:30. On my way over the shop, I got a ride from Scottie Morris from the Housekeeping staff. I had known him through his work on dorm, and I also knew him from what baseball players have told me about his help coaching the baseball team this year. It was a quick drive and short conversation, but it was another chance I got to get to know and interact with people who are behind-the-scenes at Woodberry which is something I know Rocco and I are starting to cherish more and more as our days wind down to under twenty now.
For the first two hours, I worked with Coach Johnson and Jeff Weakley on removing the tree that had fallen across the street from the track this past weekend during the rain and heavy winds. Before going down the hill, Jeff showed me some stuff on the tractor, and Coach Johnson, Jeff, and I talked the BBQ contest this past weekend. They were all extremely interested in how it had gone, and they loved hearing how about how well it went for everyone involved (at least from my perspective on the Western NC team). I also talked about senior pranks with them since that is inevitably coming up very soon. We had talked and joked about it before, but this time they seriously asked if we could stay away from certain things that make their jobs even harder. They understand that pranks will happen, and it seems that a lot of time they enjoy them but they did make this small request. I definitely think our grade will be able to help them out with it.
We headed down the hill, and Jeff used to the tractor to load the bigger pieces of the tree into the back of the track that Coach Johnson drove down. I raked behind him and picked up everything else that he couldn't. By the time we finished about half of that, it was time for break, so I drove up in the buggy while they drove up in the truck and dumped the full load we had already loaded up.
Rocco made it over the shop just as I was leaving the shop to head back down to finish up with the tree. We met Jeff and Coach Johnson down there, and we finished cleaning up the rest of the tree. Jeff used the chainsaw to cut the rest of the tree that was still standing because even if it did happen to live it would grow back deformed and never look the way it had earlier. Once we cleaned up all of the tree, Rocco and I took the rakes and pitch forks back up to the shop and came back down with some shovels to scoop up the saw dust from Jeff's use of the chain saw.
We had about an hour and a half left, so we found Mrs. Allen and Courtney and stayed with them until lunch. We worked on pulling flowers and saving bulbs just as we had done at the guardhouse but this time we were right in front of the residence. After pulling the flowers and the bulbs, we started to plant some of the new flowers, but we didn't get to help them finish because it was time for their lunch break.
