Houyoux's House
Today was another beautiful morning for working and being outside. Rocco and I began our day with Mrs. Allen by planting two flowers for the housekeeping building. This was the first time we had interacted with the housekeeping staff other than waving as we drove around campus. Many of them were hanging outside enjoying the morning weather, and they were extremely appreciative of the quick job that we were doing for them. Mrs. Allen talked about gardening and flowers with some of the ladies there, and Rocco and I talked about our project with some of the guys.
Next we headed down to Mr. Houyoux's to fix up the front of his house. We pulled up dead plants and weeds while planting new shrubs and other flowers that were either new or saved from other houses around campus. After we talked to Mr. Houyoux, Mrs. Allen told Rocco and me about how appreciative in general that most of the people in the community are towards her, her work, and the others on the grounds crew. She talked about how nice it was knowing that the people in the community cared and noticed what she and the others do just as the housekeeping staff did. I was really glad to hear her say this because in my time at Woodberry I definitely believe that is something that we have gotten better at. As a student body and community, we have improved in our appreciation and support of the grounds crew, housekeeping staff, and food service staff although we can always still improve.
After finishing up at Mr. Houyoux's house, we headed back up to the shop to get mulch to spread where we had just finished planting. We loaded up the back of our buggy after filling it up with gas and headed back down by ourselves since Mrs. Allen had other things she had to attend to. Rocco and I spread the mulch at Houyoux's house then headed back up the hill again. We ran into Mrs. Allen during our cruise back up to the shop, and she told us to spread the rest of our mulch at the Culbertson's house where we had planted last week. Doing those jobs by ourselves was nice because I knew we were doing something that Mrs. Allen would have to have done later, but we were able to knock it out for her. On our way back up, we picked up Michael Warren who was coming back from work on his senior distinction, and we picked up some rocks and loose dirt from what will be the Blundin's house for Coach Johnson. After we dumped that out and got back to the shop, we parked our buggy and headed to lunch.
