Guardhouse
On Thursday, we worked on the flower beds down by the guardhouse. After loading up flowers, necessary tools, and empty pots, we immediately headed down to the guardhouse to start pulling up the flowers that we would be planting. The new shipment of annuals arrived a couple days ago, and Mrs. Allen has tons of flowers of all shapes, sizes, and types that need to be planted around campus. We started at the guardhouse pulling almost everything up on both sides. Most of that part was fairly easy as we could do it by hand, but removing the bulbs was difficult.
Mrs. Allen wanted us to dig into the dirt, find the bulb, and then remove the plant that way, which would keep it intact for the most part as opposed to just pulling on what was above ground leaving the bulb below. Also if we did by accident pull up the top of the plant without getting the bulb, we still saved the bulb because the plant can grow again with a full and healthy bulb. She wanted to save as many of the bulbs as she possibly could for either re-planting in her work or to distribute throughout the community. That is one thing she always seems to be mindful of, saving plants whenever possible. There have been tons of instances where she does her best to re-plant and reuse anything that she can. The greenhouse and surrounding area is littered with plants that have been dug and are waiting to be re-planted or given to someone in the community. Mrs. Allen has told multiple stories about the enthusiasm and interest she always gets when she asks if anyone is interested in plants that she has saved which I think adds purpose and satisfaction to what Mrs. Allen does in her work.
We eventually got all of the bulbs out of the guardhouse beds, and by then it was time for the 9 A.M. break. We headed up the hill and back to the shop where Rocco and I got another dose of the rest of the guys on the crew. After finishing up break, Mrs. Allen went over to talk to Mrs. Kendall about her garden at her new house. Mrs. Kendall was very enthusiastic and seemed to love gardening and the potential her house had. After leaving the Kendall's house, we went back down the guardhouse to plant some of the annuals that had just been delivered. This is the part that I can tell Mrs. Allen enjoys the most, setting out the new plants and seeing what would go well where and how it all comes together in the end. The difference was drastic by the time we finished planting. We headed back up to the shop where Rocco and I grabbed a hose to come back down and water the new flowers. When we got back up and unloaded everything, we headed to lunch.
